The More You Don't Know (July 23)
dearest readers, say it ain't so! I hope that I have helped you be more informed on the subjects and goings-on, but sadly many of your neighbors don't have access to such awesomeness, so remember to pass it along!

I understand that we live in a time of media-bombardment. it is difficult to find the time to investigate the world around us while we have our day-to-day mundanity to deal with. most times all we want to do is come home and have a beer while the sports highlights run (or in my case whatever sci-fi my DVR has picked up). but we can only bury our heads in the sand so long before the wolves come. so the problem becomes one of motivating ourselves and our fellow citizens to stop filling up on media twinkies and ho-hos and instead turn return to the idea of yesteryear's morning or evening paper at the dinner table, chock full of informational goodness and updated for our 21st century lifestyle. but the news of today is a world-wide web of information and navigating to the relevant bytes can be as frustrating as driving on any highway come rush hour. but we're getting better. we've now seen the rise of social news sites and citizen journalism and I have the hope that as these tools are continually refined in the coming years we will see a more complete world-view, succinct in it's delivery, sublime in its message.

Lord of the Email: Return of the Newsletter
having battled with my own personal demons for the last few months, I'm going to attempt to get back into the groove of things and even attempt an update of the format. I know not all of you read this religiously (even though it IS a religious experience, can't you feel the wonderment?) but its cathartic for me. I'm adding tags to the links now that summerize the content, I'll try to be as unbiased as possible. ;) those will be in green.
so here we go:
I think we are living in times that can be described both as amazing and perilous, and I have the hope that we may use our talents and understanding to build a better future. for the last six years we have lived the embodiment of FUD (for the uninitiated geeks, that's Fear/Uncertainty/Doubt) as we are told that the world is out to get us and we ought to be looking over our shoulders. well there is one fundamental flaw with such reasoning, we're probably going to run into something unexpected because we're not paying attention to where we're going. one of the thoughts I've had on this subject is the lack of vision we seem to be experiencing these days. gone are the days of the Nuclear Age or the Space Age and their accompanying boosts of the imagination. to be fair, we do have the internet, but I can only watch so many videos of people getting their genitalia abused by a dog riding a Mentos-n-Coke-powered skateboard before I have to wonder if its really helping us have any inspiration for the future. I mean, its great and all that I can superpoke someone (where's the porn reference now?) or see photos of cats, dressed up by nutjobs, being in my whatever doing something to my stuff; but where is the enlightenment of the masses we were promised in the 90's? I think Al sold us a highway to Tardtown based on some of the stuff I've seen on here. But there is hope, even if the majority of internet users seem content to upload compromising photos/videos of themselves, there is still a multitude of useful information that can be used to improve life and communication. and maybe, just maybe, as this grand forum continues to evolve and grow, a few people will be inspired and can use this tool to better the world around them. the most any of us can do is try, and so try I do. that being said....

I think we are living in times that can be described both as amazing and perilous, and I have the hope that we may use our talents and understanding to build a better future. for the last six years we have lived the embodiment of FUD (for the uninitiated geeks, that's Fear/Uncertainty/Doubt) as we are told that the world is out to get us and we ought to be looking over our shoulders. well there is one fundamental flaw with such reasoning, we're probably going to run into something unexpected because we're not paying attention to where we're going. one of the thoughts I've had on this subject is the lack of vision we seem to be experiencing these days. gone are the days of the Nuclear Age or the Space Age and their accompanying boosts of the imagination. to be fair, we do have the internet, but I can only watch so many videos of people getting their genitalia abused by a dog riding a Mentos-n-Coke-powered skateboard before I have to wonder if its really helping us have any inspiration for the future. I mean, its great and all that I can superpoke someone (where's the porn reference now?) or see photos of cats, dressed up by nutjobs, being in my whatever doing something to my stuff; but where is the enlightenment of the masses we were promised in the 90's? I think Al sold us a highway to Tardtown based on some of the stuff I've seen on here. But there is hope, even if the majority of internet users seem content to upload compromising photos/videos of themselves, there is still a multitude of useful information that can be used to improve life and communication. and maybe, just maybe, as this grand forum continues to evolve and grow, a few people will be inspired and can use this tool to better the world around them. the most any of us can do is try, and so try I do. that being said....

entropy is coming to get you

you can't escape it, "God" built it into the universe and it's coming to get you. your body is decaying as you read this and before the universe ages the same equivalent to a second of your life, you'll be long gone. no matter what philosophy or religion you buy into to, your actions on this rock of dead star matter, matter not. death comes surely to us all, an on-rushing wave of inevitability that causes all men to pause in their wanderings and reflect on their purpose, often with no discernible answer. what then should we do? waste away in idle luxury and pleasure; placating the physical beast until such time as the body relinquishes it life force? perhaps we should spend our time, buried, nose in book, training up the mind for eventualities we will never engage as we languish in the library of potential. NO, the only course that bears fruit of fulfillment and satisfaction is one of action. action born of understanding and prudence; action that is tempered with wisdom and knowledge that bring forth a harvest of meaning. whatever belief you have in the origin of man's intellect and capacity, one cannot deny that actualization of our potential is what gives us our superiority, for if man were to rest upon his laurels, he would find only wilted flowers underneath his ass. idle hands did not carry us to the moon. idle hands did not construct wonders of the mind. idle hands will never reward the flesh with the bounties of the imagination. to take action is acknowledge the will to become. in each person is the innate desire to become more than we are. there may be no single form that we seek, but in each person we find this dream of becoming. the sadness and disappointment that so often accompany us on life's journey is the direct result of our failure to become that which we seek to be. whether it be riches, fame, marriage, parenthood, security, comfort, recognition, or appreciation; we all desire to have our heart's wishes come to pass. to what end, however? at the end of all things, the meaning we ascribe to our reality passes with the universe that gives rise to said reality. but to abandon our hopes and dreams in the face of entropy is the very definition of nihilism. the despair of nihilism serves no purpose, and indeed denies the idea of purpose. I argue, however, that purpose had its genesis within the self; that the nature of consciousness gives rise to the capacity for self-determination, and thus destiny, that is chosen and produced by the conscious mind. it is no coincidence that "destiny" and "destination" share the same root idea; movement towards a final position indicated by the cessation of travel. so as you move through your destiny today, reflect on where you wish to cease your journey.

The (potentially literal) war on the middle class and the future of the global community

of course I know that future predictions are just that, predictions. but one wonders...
if the middle class (or every class lower than the upper class) makes up the majority of the population and they become so completely dissatisfied with the current government that they demand change, then said government suppressing this desire becomes totalitarian, or at the very least it demonstrates the extent to which the governing entities are removed from the common man.
"The world's middle classes might unite, using access to knowledge, resources and skills to shape transnational processes in their own class interest"
and this is a danger? do not corporations and governing bodies do this on a daily basis? it would seem they are unwilling to let their own power structure devolve or lessen in scope. a thought I've had on the subject of future power generation (energy) would seem to apply here.
when I think about how alternative energy might be applied, I believe that the real revolution will be decentralized generation, where everyone can freely manufacture their own energy (solar cells most likely) and then purchase addition energy as required. this is fundamentally different than today's infrastructure where all forms of energy are centralized, or semi-centralized, and any disruption or manipulation of the system results in massive repercussions for a large number of people, which is to say that this puts much power in few hands. I believe that alot of the emphasis by the government on particular forms of alternative energy have to do with the structure of their implementation. if you look at these forms, hydrogen, ethanol, and to a lesser extent biodiesel, you see that these solutions are all centralized power structures, where the production and distribution are greatly dependent upon a supply chain that is very linear.
when you have production of any good in such a linear fashion you have consolidation of wealth, power, and influence. this is born out by the slew of mergers and subsidies that many of basic providers of goods and services have received. while this has been good from the standpoint of profit and reduction in cost of said goods and services, it has had a deleterious effect upon the consumer in the form of reduced accountability. even if a company is guilty of some crime, the worst they generally face is a fine, which is not felt by the people making the decisions in these companies, it is paid for by the shareholders, who are generally the very people who have been wronged in the first place. this has no greater analog than the practice of indulgences in the Catholic Church. here we have a legal system that allows powerful entities to pay money to commit offenses and then generally continue with business as usual with no further repercussions.
now we can analyze the structure of political power here in the West. at the formation of our country, the founding fathers envisioned a system where semi-autonomous entities (the states) would be bound together in a federal union, whose purpose was the protection of the rights of the citizens to engage in free enterprise as they saw fit. over the years, this system has mutated into the federal goliath we know today, where the whims and influence of the few hold sway over the desires and rights of the many. now each change of governmental power can bring an entire shift of priority to a system whose assets include a budget of several TRILLION dollars a year, a mammoth military force with technological prowess is unprecedented in history, and an increasing willingness of the populace to capitulate to the imposition on their rights in the same of "security".
however, perhaps there is a ray of hope in the face of this onslaught. this very message is carried on the back of this hope. the internet (or more accurately the entire communications infrastructure) has the potential to reshape the boundaries of thought and revolutionize the way in which people connect. every day there is some new way for people all over the world to aggregate and share their thoughts, feelings, and dreams, all of which is unprecedented in the history of civilization. in a few more years I'll be able to have a conversation in real time with friends I've met in every corner of the globe, and I might have not even met them in person, and may never do so, but through common interest we are connected. now I realize that is a old maxim for the internet but as I said, every day brings new tools into people's lives and enables them to reach out in whatever fashion they feel comfortable, whether it be video, podcast, blog, webpage, music, pictures, email, IM, text message, or phone call. is it any wonder that governments have been so concerned with monitoring the internet for "disturbances in the force?" they don't want their seedy world of indulgences placed under the microscope of the global populace. I propose that we are on the edge of either a second Dark Age or a new Enlightenment. is it any coincidence that this revolution of communication and cooperation is literally built on rivers of light? I think not.
